Samsung SIII people often can't hear me but voice recorder works

I got a new handset and I'm not sure if it's faulty or if there are apps interfering or what. People can sometimes hear me but I can rarely get through a call without the person at the other end losing me. Sometimes people cannot hear me at all. Generally I can hear them perfectly.

Microphone?
I think not as the voice recorder seems to work perfectly.

SIM? I called Vodafone - they say the (new) microSIM seems AOK.

So could it be a defective handset? Or could some background apps cause issues?

Has anyone seen similar?

Many thanks - Jamie

Re: Samsung SIII people often can't hear me but voice recorder works

Welcome to Android Central! The S3 is a pretty old phone, so when you say it's new, do you mean it's a refurbished or used phone that's new to you?

The voice recorder might use the secondary mic (which is typically what the speakerphone and video camera use as well), so see if people can hear you on speakerphone (or while using a headset, either wired or Bluetooth). If they can hear you fine that way, then the primary phone mic is either faulty or blocked by something. Check the mic opening to make sure it isn't clogged with debris or lint.
