I have a new Samsung using an old sim card and can't send text messages, make calls or receive calls. How can I fix this?

Samsung III battery died, received Samsung 5 from AT&T. I switched SIM card, do not have micro card, never did. Can't receive calls, make calls or send text. Please advise.

If they sent you the phone with a card in it, that's the card that's tied to your account and the old one is dead. If not, the card from the 3 should work in the 5, but you should still do an equipment swap (reset your records - otherwise the next update you get will be for an S3, and it won't update the phone) at the store. In any event, bring it into an AT&T store and they'll straighten it out.
