Help, my samsung somehow still accesses the internet

I have a little bit of an older Samsung, s3 to be exact. Recently I've been turning off my wifi and data just to save the battery. But with both settings switched off I'm somehow still getting notifications from internet apps like Gmail, Snapchat, Facebook and Facebook Chat in real time. So for example, if someone sent me a facebook message on my pc it'll show up on my phone at roughly the same time. When I go and check both wifi and data are switched off. Which is really weird.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Android Central! How are you turning off mobile data--in the Quick Settings menu?
