Default Pictures seem to be stored in two places

My 11.8GB of device storage show about 8GB of pictures in the DCIM folder even though Camera is set to store pictures on the 64GB external sd card. My pictures are in the DCIM folder on the sd card too. What could be causing the pictures to store to both locations?

Welcome to Android Central! Is it the exact same amount in the Internal Storage compared to the external SD card? Or is there significantly more storage taken up in the external SD? A big chunk of it might be due to thumbnails, which can build up significantly if you have lots and lots of photos saved. Use a file manager and check the properties for the DCIM/.thumbnails folder.
