Texts, Email & IM

I have a Galaxy S4 that I recently acquired and need some help with how to make the phone NOT come alive when I receive texts, emails or IM. I need to have a notification tell me that I have a message, then I will choose when to open and read it.
Can you suggest what to do. Thank you.
