    Default LCD is completely dead

    Hey guys,

This weekend I was at a soccer game, and while standing on the side lines with my phone in my pocked (screen facing my leg) the soccer ball hit me square in the leg where my phone was. The screen itself is not damaged, but from what I can tell the actual LCD screen underneath is damaged. Nothing displays on the screen at all. From my best guess it appears the phone is still working, somewhat. It will vibrate when I get calls, but I tried sending myself a text from my wife's phone and nothing happened. I have it plugged into my computer and it comes up on my computer and I was able to pull pics and music off. But while its plugged in the red light is not on like it usually would be while charging and the screen is locked. The blue light flashes every 5 seconds. I pulled the battery and then held the power button to confirm it is turned on and I'm still not getting anything.

My concern is, if I fix the screen, how can I know that it will function like it should. Or am I going to have issues with phone performance? I'm just concerned, because the only OEM screen/LCD replacements that I can find are around $200. I don't want to drop $200 on a phone that isn't going to work after that.

Is there anything I can do to check things out, or am I just going to have to take a chance?

Repairing your own device IS a mixed bag. Sometimes it can be done fairly easily and sometimes it's VERY difficult. Almost always you run the risk of damaging the ribbon cables and other delicate internals in the process. You don't have insurance from your carrier? OR if you bought it with a credit card you MIGHT have some coverage that way, especially American Express.

Thanks for the quick reply. I completely understand the risks of replacing parts myself, I've replaced parts on iPhones for years and I've run into problems with the ribbons. I guess I'm trying to find out if there's anything I can check, or any programs that I can run that will analyze the phone to see if it is still working.

Unfortunately I don't have insurance form the carrier (AT&T) and I paid for with it my debit card. Before I buy anything I'm going to contact them and see if there is anything that can be done.

From what I understood, the S4 screen is a little on the difficult side to fix. Mainly the possibility of damaging other components while trying to fix what you need to.
