Sound out of phone when using headphones

Is there any way to prevent my phone speaker from making sounds when I'm using headphones?

I need the ringtone, facebook notifications, etc. to go through my earphones only, and they currently go through both.

Have you tried different headphones? It shouldn't do that unless your earphones are connected via BlueTooth. If they are the latter, I'm afraid there's no way to stop that behavior.

It happens on both, and on multiple sets of headphones. It's driving me crazy, lol.
