My photos have disappeared from Gallery but still in My folders

I was trying to create more space on galaxy s4 mini and have clearly accidentally deleted something important. My Gallery app seems to have stopped working. Although the icon is there, it is empty of files. My photos are all stored in My Folders still and any new photos I take go there and not Gallery. How can I restore my photos back to the Gallery (en mass as there are 500+) and restore its normal function without risking losing anything (they're not backed up anywhere)?

There are no pictures in Gallery, it displays the pictures that Media Player finds in the phone. Since that only runs at startup and when you do something media-related (like take a picture), try restarting the phone. If that doesn't do it, Gallery is probably missing some file you deleted. You could reinstall Gallery. Google Photos, QuickPic or any other picture app from the play store.
