How to get shortcut in Google Keyboard to show up when typing.

I'm a iOS convert and just got my S4 last Friday. So far, I've got over the setup, app downloads, logins & learning curve and really starting to enjoy my phone. I have Google Keyboard installed and have setup short cuts for frequently typed words/phrases - as I had them on iOS. For example, if I type in "eml", my email address pops up. Or "addr", my address pops up. For some reason, this isn't working on the S4/Android. What am I doing wrong?
