Force native SMS application to use Google Voice?

Is there any way to force the native SMS application to use Google Voice? I believe there is something if you have a rooted device, but I am looking for something that does not require rooting.

Why not simply just use Google Voice for texting, and ignore the native app? The only time I use the native app is when pics are transmitted. And I expect Google to upgrade Voice to handle MMS soon.

Does it matter WHY?

The reason is that certain functionality only works with the native messaging application, e.g., voice control.

A couple examples: I'm trying to set SmartActions to text my google voice number (which forwards to my google mail) to remind me to charge my phone if it gets below a certain percentage (SmartActions has the option to text but none to use email, hence the workaround). I'd like to use GV to send the text so I don't have to pay for it. In addition, SmartActions has an option to "auto-reply" to text messages (for example, if you are driving, you could have it auto-reply that you will reply when you reach your destination as you don't drive and text). This also uses the native text messaging app.
