email manual refresh message

I set my email settings to manual sync. But ever since i updated my phone, whenever I open the stock email and click refresh, there is a message that says, "Email sync turned off."
I tried changing the sync settings, but they are already set on manual, like I want them to be. I also updated their sync in the phone settings, but my new emails still aren't coming through. Why can't I view my emails ever since the update?

Also, syncing emails from the phone settings don't update my current emails.
