The integrated Play Music app driving me mad

So I connect my phone to my computer, move a song into the Music folder, then go to look for it - and it's not there. Yet Windows Explorer on my computer shows that it's right there, in the Music folder on my phone?! What the h*ll is going on? Why am I not seeing or finding the song on my phone? I closed the app and reopened it, but that didn't help. I've been able to arrange my songs okay so far with the Play Music app (that comes with the phone), but now it's driving me crazy. And when I download songs, this is the app that it appears in, so I'd like to keep using it. As long as I can find my songs in it.

Open the Play Music app, swipe in from the left and tap Settings, then Refresh. Does that do anything? Also, see what happens if you flip the Downloaded Only switch on. Does it locate the music?
