"Can't reach Google at the moment" when trying to send texts with Google Now

I have a Galaxy s5 mini. Whenever I try to send texts or emails through Google Now I get the error message "can't reach Google at the moment". This happens at the stage where the message is ready and it asks " are you ready to send the message?" Before I can answer it promptly gives the error message. I know I am connected to the internet as other features of Google Now work perfectly. I have tried switching between Wi-Fi and Mobile data as well as rebooting my phone but nothing has worked.
