    I've rooted my device with towel root and I've tried no frills cpu and it won't let me overclock it.

    You need a custom kernel in order to overclock. If you have the Verizon or AT&T variant your bootloader is locked and you cannot flash a custom kernel. So that would be a no. If you have the T-Mobile or Sprint version, the bootloader is unlocked and I think you might be able to flash a custom kernel then overclock.
