Galaxy S5 battery issues already?

Hi All,

Just throwing this one out there but has anybody noticed the battery on their new S5 is not as great as the reviews all believe?

I got mine on Thursday morning in Switzerland. It's the European model - and I brought it home to the UK.

Charged it up fully, then let it discharge which took about 15 hours (though eight of those were in bed). Then yesterday, I charged it from 2% up to 100% at about 1pm. It was down to 20% by 10pm. Obviously, I'm using it a fair bit but no more than the other reviewers seem to imply.

I have it linked to my Gear 2 Neo and wonder if that's the cause. But I can't see how it would be as GSAM reckons Bluetooth is low usage and also my friend is using his connected to the Gear 2 and tells me yesterday, he had 90 mins of Netflix, Facebook and general playing before he got down to 90%. GSAM tells me that the kernel is the biggest user.

I vaguely seem to remember the S3 having a similar battery drain at first and not being sure what it was and it settled down eventually - but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and experiences. By the way, I have Power Saving ON here too!

As a guide, it is now down to 93% after about an hour off charge with the screen having barely been on.

Your kernel usage is abnormally high and is the reason for your poor battery life.

I would restart the phone and see how the battery life is tomorrow, if it doesn't get better I would factory reset and see how it goes from then on.

It definitely appears to be my kernel that's doing it - but what? And how can I stop? See attached screenshots I just took.. Hope someone can help. I've restarted it like msavic6 suggested and am just charging it back up to 100% again to see what that does..

I'm having the same problem. Battery life was okay — nothing special — during the first few days, but it has gradually gotten worse, and “Android OS” is the issue, according to the battery stats. Today I took my phone off the charger at 8 a.m., and four hours later, it's down to 59%. I've listened to Audible for an hour (with the screen off), sent a few messages in WhatsApp, and took three pictures. That's about it.

I can't work out what's causing the drain. I've disabled things like Dropbox camera upload and Google+ Auto-Backup, turned off always-on Wi-Fi, and even killed Google Now. But none of it appears to be making any difference.

I'm reading a lot about people enabling ART in the developer options. Does that seem to work for you guys in terms of battery life or is that placebo?

I've done research and I can't find anything. Mine says Android Kernel is taking up the majority of my battery. More specifically the "Combined App Wakeclocks".

I was having major battery issues early on, and they were fixed by toggling off "location" in the quick settings. (I think it was trying to find me using GPS in my concrete work complex.) I have turned my location settings to WiFi and network today so I will see if the battery is as good as when I turned location off completely.

Kernal usage would be very high if the S5 is being stored and not used for any functions. If you are doing that, either turn off the power entirely by holding the power button for 60 seconds or use Ultra High Power Saving Mode where one can only make and receive calls and make and receive messages.

The battery can last 12 days in Ultra Power Saving Mode from a full charge as displayed on the screen. I charged mine last night and it dropped from 100% to 97% overnight. My Kernal (Android OS) used 54.7% since no other functions were operative. The Screen used 42.9% for the same reason since it only drew power when I turned it on just now.

I turned off location services and it fixed it for me. There has to be some sort of bug in location services. I had it only set for GPS but even that was enough to really drain the battery.

For the first week my battery lasted for days! I would charge it, say, Monday night before going to bed using the wall charger (which seems to charge must faster than my PC) and the phone would last through constant usage until Wednesday afternoon. Now just the last couple of days my phone is not even lasting a few hours! Just last night I went to bed at 57% and when I woke up 3 hours late I realized my phone died approx 5 hours after I went to sleep. How is that even possible?!

I haven't changed any settings and I'm not running any new apps. My battery usage says 80% Android System. :'(

I too am having a similar issue. I got the phone Friday and it lasted until Monday, it was great. Then I charged it yesterday and I noticed with in a few hours without using it at all it was down to 64%. Went to sleep at midnight and when I got up it was down to 28%. I looked in battery and this is what I saw. Does not seem right, How can I fix this. I already turned the phone off and on.

I've been having the same issue. At first is was quick connect that was causing it and made it drop from 30% to 1% while I was asleep, I disabled that and now Android OS is the cause for the battery drain while I sleep. I have all programs closed, blocking mode on and it's still draining like a beast.

Turn on Ultra Power Savings when you sleep. That will turn off ALL apps but 6. Hopefully, when you wake and turn off Ultra Power Savings things will work properly.

I just got my phone on Thursday evening. I am not a heavy user. and the battery life stinks. They sold me this under the pretense that the battery would last 19 hours which meant to me I would not have to charge it but a few times a week. I have tweaked everything I can to make setting use less battery and the issue persists. my OS is taking over everything and Sprint is not being very helpful.

Hi! I'm from Poland and my English isn't good, but I need a piece of advice from you, because Polish Android Forum didn't help me.
I've had my S5 for 15 days. At the beginning, its battery life was amazing! It was enough for 2,5 days or for 1,5 days when I used it strongly.
Since last Wednesday, it drains very fast. Yesterday evening, I disconnected S5 from the wall socted, it was fully charged. This morning (I guess 10h later), it was only 47%.
WiFi, bluetooth, GPS, all location's service etc was turned off. Before I went to the bed, I turned off all apps. I always turn on battery saving mode. I'd installed Cut the Rope 2, Evernote, Last Epress, Messenger, Nicole, Simpsong, Smash Hit, Wind-up Knight 2, but I guess they aren't the source of battery problem, because I've them also on my tablet for a long time and its battery's enough for few days. But maybe you think that they are problematic...? All apps are updated.
Kernel used 53%, Android OS 11%.Espacially for solving battery problem, I didn't use my S5, it was just laying on the desk. But it still drains quite fast.
Yesterday I installed DS Battery Saver and I set strong profile. But it didn't help. Maybe it's just because smartphones don't like to being unused? I also installed Greenify and I frozen few apps. CPU Spy tells: 47% - 300 MHz. Deep sleep just 24%. Total state time: almost 71h. Wakelock detector: active - 75 %. Statistic for 70h. I can't check which apps are using CPU, because I don't have ROOT access. Do you have any idea?
