brand new phone/tripped water detecter

My buddy here at work received his brand new Verizon s5 today via FedEx. He opened the box to find both the battery still in its sealed package and the phone have their moisture detectors tripped. On all my phones in the past the stickers have been white. On both the battery and inside back of his phone they have the red hash marks. Wtf? We just took it out of the box for the first time ever.

The hash marks are normal. When they trip, it turns solid red.
