I just got the Samsung S5 and really like it so far. The only thing that I am having a problem with is activating the hot spot. When I try to activate it I get the following message "Use of this service requires a subscription to Mobil HotSpot or Mobile Broadband Connection". My understanding is that the FCC ruled that as long as you do not have a unlimited data plan Verizon had to allow you to tether. On my old Galaxy Nexus is used FoxFi and never had any issues. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks

I'm getting the same message when I try to use FoxFi. I can still tether with a wire, but the wireless hot spot will not work. ^$%#& Verizon!

I just turned my VZW S5 into a mobile hotspot to see if I had any problems. No issue for me. Started it up in settings just like I did on my G2 or DNA and it works like a charm.

What plan do you have with Verizon? I have the "Share Everything Plan" with 4GB of data. Were you able to connect using WIFI ? Maybe I need to contact Verizon.

Yeah, I concur. I've had mobile hotspot ability since my GNex. Tried it a couple of days ago and it seems to work just fine on my GS5. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it. Probably just a provisioning snafu. Call them and let them know your phone thinks it's not provisioned for hotspot.

If you are on a currently publicly advertised plan then they all include hotspot. But some legacy plans like unlimited data, or some tiers of the old family share plan or the $60 loyalty plan with 2gb data and unlimited talk and text, and I am sure a number of other legacy plans. You can move to a more everything plan at anytime. Verizon doesn't have to allow legacy plans free hotspot.

In your specific situation, even though the share everything plan is a legacy plan, it does include hotspot. So if you have a problem, then contact Verizon

Personally I pay for $30 additional for unlimited hotspot and it works fine on all my devices.

Currently have the 8GB share everything plan. And yep, I was able to connect my N7.

Hi 3rdpig...which plan do you have, unlimited? If so...how do you set up the wire tether? I'm having trouble accessing data for my wifi tablet and I'd rather do the wired tether than nothing at all, so any help would be appreciated

    Thanks!

I'm not on Verizon. Understand in some places they have better service .
They are proud of their data. And from the past they like to throw hidden charges in their bills.

    On the AT&T plan.
Had to call AT&T and get them to turn stuff on so I could use my phone as a Hotspot.
    It worked very good.

Are you on an unlimited plan? Then that's why. If you're not, and you're on a share everything plan, you need to remind them of this: Verizon Wireless To Pay $1.25 Million To Settle Investigation | FCC.gov

All currently advertised plans include hotspot. If you have a legacy plan, then Verizon can move you to a current plan at anytime

I am on Verizon and FoxFi installed just fine on my S5... but I took it off because FoxFi wanted me to set a pincode on the phone.

On my prior Galaxy S Fascinate on Verizon VZW would not allow me to tether w/o the $30/month fee.
I installed FoxFi on that phone also and went WiFi just fine with my laptop.

I have the Galaxy S5, Verizon, share everything. I lost my legacy stuff years ago. Have been w Verizon maybe 12 years, maybe more. On the road, traveling, I use mobile hotspot. It WORKS fine, but in one night of a few emails, news articles and a Netflix movie, I burn 3GB, or more. I use hughesnet at home, so that is no issue...traveling for weeks or months is like them committing robbery. I already know to have all extraneous programs off, but even running clean like that, it uses 2.5 GB to watch one Netflix movie. Clearly it is a ripoff, but I would like a workaround.

Is watching on the phone itself cheaper?
