Hello AC,

I have recently come from an iPhone 4S, and during the month cycle for my data plan, I used about 0.60 GB of data (using Safari, Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook most of the time), and when I got my Galaxy S5, in just 2 days I used up 0.25 GB of data. This is (IMO) a very large difference as I am just doing the same as I had before, but with a new phone..? How can I reduce this usage (without turning off data altogether). I use WIFI whenever possible. I am also looking for a solution to MANUALLY retrieve emails from the Email and Gmail apps.

Please help a new Android user in need. Thank you :)

Edit: The 0.60 GB of data usage on my iPhone 4S is about 20 days of usage, and the 0.25 is 2 days.

Sync may be doing it but also... You did get a new phone so you were probably downloading apps or had them auto updating so that is where the chunk came from... At least I'd think.

Go to settings and data usage... What shows as the most usage? Ensure to drag the graph bars out (so it shows the date range you want to look at.. Example below) so we can see it.

The screenshot. The deleted app was speedtest.net after 2 uses.

Might make sure you don't have google+ or Picasa set to auto backup, that will eat up data quick. I have unlimited data but still disable auto update in play store to help save power

It will. These phones can take 4k video and if you have Google+ set to auto backup on a cell signal you can easily eat up 2 GB of data with just a 5 minute 4k clip.

I switched from iPhone, all the new and extra downloading caused me to go over my cap this month, I called Verizon and they did the right thing (shocked) and upgraded my data for free this month.

Our team at Opera have a pretty neat app called Opera Max. It uses a unique compressions algorithm to help you save your data upto 50% and extend the life of your data plan!
