Hi I have a Samsung s5 and when I send one of the hundreds of emoticons with a text the receiver of my text just sees a box shape (like it is unicode, how can I change that and why when I include an emoticon does it turn the message to an mms? Please help!

Depends if their phone supports the emoticons, usually if it doesn't they will see a box. The message stays sms if you have an emoticon

Open settings in the stock Messaging app. Select "Text Messages", then "Input Mode". Select "Automatic".

This should work

I think that the s3 only has the default android emoticons that are little android heads. The support for emoticons on Galaxy devices started with the Note 3, because on the s3 /s4's I looked it, they didn't have any emoticons. But you can check if the S3 has it by going on the Samsung Keyboard, hold the Mic, by Sym, and check if it has the smile face and see what emoticons it has.
