Default Email client apps: push vs. polling?

Is one better than the other with respect to battery and data usage?

Polling. With push you always have a connection to the server and are always listening. Polling your phone connects, checks in, downloads, and closes the connection.

how often can we poll to make a difference, then? if I poll every 5 minutes, is that still using less battery than pushing? my email does push... I really like the instant mail!
