Samsung s5 email background data

So my s5 started using around a gig of background data a week just from the email app (the standard email app that comes with the phone). I didn't notice this until I almost reached my data limit after two weeks. Anybody know how to fix this? Thanks

Restrict background data within the data usage settings... Or set the email app to only sync via wifi.

Did you do the lates update that enables wifi calls? The reason I ask is since I did it I get alerts for junk mail. I wonder if thats contributaing to your problem.

See it's interesting, this happening on my parents phone. On my droid, I don't restrict background data, and constantly get notified about emails, but it barely uses any data.

I am having the same issue. Tons of data consumption on email. I did not have the situation a few months back and my use is similar.
