I am trying to do a factory reset on my S5 but every time I select it the phone shuts down like it's starting the reset. The screen goes black but a couple of the indicator lights stay on and the phone does nothing else. Those indicator lights stay on with a black screen and it stays frozen like that.

I have a feeling doing something in Recovery may help but I don't know exactly what. Did you try powering down, pulling the battery, then powering back on?

Yep. I tried powering down and removing the battery. When I try to power down naturally the phone locks up and I have to remove the battery to get it to power back up. It does the same thing when I try the factory reset. It says shutting down and begins to shut down and ends up with a black screen like the power is off but a couple of the indicator lights are still on and the phone just locks up and never restarts.

Seen this before
First check Pull the battery wait 10 secounds
Now put the Battery back in
Press and hold the V+ and home button at the same time then press power
You should get the Logo but with Blue or red or yellow writing at the top
If this works you should be in recovery mode
Now as you want to do a Factory wipe you can from here
But first to a wipe devic cache then do a wipe this should work
If it doesn't then the phones Bios is corrupted and will need to go to Samsung for repair
