Will a Galaxy S5 support 256 GB memory cards when available?

I'll never understand people being confused as to why someone would want higher capacities. Movies are 4-6 gigs each. FLAC albums are 300-500 megs each. The real question is, how can you have ENOUGH storage?

You should manage your SD card space to the things you REALLY NEED to take mobile, and put any excess items in an external hard drive. I would find it a bit hard to believe you need to take 128GB of files to be mobile on a device. I used to want to put everything on my SD card but most of the stuff I didn't really use

You should also look into putting some of your items into a cloud storage so it would save some space on your device

re: When will there be a 256gb memory card and will the Galaxy S5 be able to use it?

Going from a 64GB iPhone 5, with 1GB of managed free space (i.e. I kept it free for iOS operation), to a Galaxy S5 with a 128GB card was a big upgrade. A lot of people couldn't fathom wanting to carry around 6000+ songs on a phone and told me I was crazy when they looked at my iPhone's music collection. Now I have some breathing room, about 50GB, on my memory card. I'm installing apps on the S5's 16GB internal storage and putting all my media (pictures, music, videos) on the memory card.

I should be fine for a while but I can understand how some people would want more storage space. Who knows when those cards will come out and if the S5 will support them. Despite featuring microSDXC card slots, manufacturers had to update their devices to support 128GB cards. Not all of them supported the cards right out of the gate and the current batch may not be compatible with 256GB cards when they are released.

The only suggestion I have, in terms of music, is to not carry around lossless files. You don't need those for portable listening environments. Even 128kbps AAC/mp3 files would be fine for portable listening conditions (walking down the street, riding the bus/train/subway, driving in a car, etc.). That would free up a lot of space if you are carrying around lossless files.

I don't see why the current flagships won't be compatible with a higher capacity micro SD card when devices from 3 years ago are compatible with the new 128 GB card.

There is something different about the higher capacity cards. Despite fitting within the microSDXC standard, they may not work with older devices. It was noted on Amazon's website. Not every microSDXC compatible device works with the 128GB card. As it stands, my Samsung digital camera will only work with the 64GB microSDXC card I have for it, neither of my 128GB cards work properly. The camera will read the memory cards fine but it won't write pictures to them. It's listed as being fully microSDXC compatible but it came out before the 128GB cards. There might be an update for it that I haven't downloaded though.

OK I don't know a lot about it so maybe you are right.

There are a lot of devices that work with the 128GB card though.

Edit: Maybe this list is wrong. I can see a few Samsung cameras on here, are any of them your camera?

How in the world did u manage 2 fill those SD cards up??? Must be the secret 2 life or something stored in there

Yeah, 42 must be a big number. (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). I would say just try it. Shouldn't cause any problems if not supported, no?

Boom! From My S5

I love how this post quickly becomes about how he can possibly fill 128gb instead of actually answering the original question everyone rebuttals with another question. Also everytime i hear someone saying how could you fill up all that space i think to myself spoken like a true iphone user. It is easy to fill 128gb especially if you're anything like me and have 9Tb of desktop storage. 128gb is nothing hell 512gb is like nothing especially with the cost of HDD storage plummeting and with it at the same time all other forms of physical digital storage.
It really makes me think that anyone who pays the outrageous costs associate with cloud storage is daft. And back to my original point every post which deals with a similar subject or quandary has the exact same problem short sighted people with no real answers and nothing of significance or substance to add. Im sorry i just had to vent this is the fifth post i have found looking for the same answer and low and behold the same rubbish.

Aren't you the one who is getting a $1 spare s5 and is concerned with a $8 insurance charge? Get 2 128 GB cards for your spare s5.

Your completely wrong, any device which takes 64gb micro Sd cards will accept all sdxc cards upto the maximum 2TB cards, which I assume will take another 3 or 4 years to appear.

I fell for one of those "256gb" cards on eBay from China. Never again...

Nice tribute to cluelessness. The question is regarding MicroSD, not SD.

Sdxc is a standard so assuming there is no limitation built into the phone it will work until a new standard has to replace it. As to why anyone needs this much space. There are a million reasons. First phones are replacing laptops for alot of users. I still need my power rig with 30 something terabytes for media and different methods of backup but ive phased out my laptop. It would be nice to have my entire music and movie library on my phone. And with higher storage would come the ability for cloud services like google drive to sync so available offline etc. Truth be told more space is always good. Id buy a case with a 1tb ssd piggy backed and a big battery if they offered them

this is a standard sized PNY 256gb SDXC card.... have yet to have any problems, it's been nearly 5 months on my samsung s3..... I assume any other samsung that supports exfat shouldn't have any problems(other than running out of space :p)

I can answer this question as it would apply to me. Music is the answer. An entire library of music! My library just reached 133 GB and won't fit on my G Note 4's 128 GB micro SD card. I'm wanting to also know if a 256 GB micro SD card would be recognized by my Note 4. Does anyone know???

I need to get all of my music on to removable media like this because I want to have access to my music when I'm having Internet issues and because I use Google Music Service. My Onkyo won't recognize Google Music Service like it will iTunes, Rhapsody, Pandora and a couple of other big name Internet music services. So if I'm hanging out around the pool or anywhere on my local LAN I can only play my music using the Onkyo Android software if the music is stored locally.

This is why I need massive music storage like t his and my G Note 4 likes my 128 GB micro SD card. I'm hopin the 256 GB will work. They are now available at Best Buy and Walmart.

Does anyone know or heard anything about this?

Thank you very much for any info you might have!

S3s could take normal sized SD cards? Dang it.

But I agree, there's no reason that a GS5 couldn't handle a > 128GB microSD card should one appear on the market, if it follows the SDXC standard. IIRC, the 128GB microSD card either didn't exist or it had just been announced with the GS5 was first released.

I've only heard that SanDisk has a 200GB microSD card in the works; not sure why they can't quite go all the way to 256. Not to mention the initial price tag, not unlike the 512GB standard SD cards are today, are quite ridiculous.

However, again, regardless of the storage size, if it's SDXC, a Galaxy S5 should be able to read it. One day, I too, would like to consider making my phone the heir to my iPod; not ready yet, because in-car integration lags behind it (even in Android Auto, but that's a different story altogether).
