S5 SIMM card

I am planning to travel to Italy toward the end of this year. I have heard that it is possible and much cheaper to purchase a SIMM card in Italy that will allow me to use my Verizon Galaxy S5 while I am overseas. Has anyone tried this? Are there any problems?

Re: S5 SIMM card

I bought my S5 last May specifically because I was going to Italy and my old clamshell phone would not work there. I signed up for the Global Data plan and headed to Italy. Voice calling in Italy was no problem. I never called back to the USA. I used some data using Google maps to guide me around Switzerland but for most other data I was using WiFi in hotels, etc. When I got back home I cancelled the Global Data plan. I planned to buy a local SIM card but it would mean your USA phone number would not be active. Since it was all working I skipped the local SIM card.

If you drive 1 foot into Switzerland you have to pay a road tax. Unless the car already has the sticker in the window. I think it was around $30.
