Re: how to transfer MP3 files using a usb cable

Plug the cable into the phone. Plug the other end into the computer (not into a USB hub). You should get a Windows Explorer window opening, or a menu asking what to do for this kind of device (you want a Windows Explorer window, but I wouldn't check the "always" box - you may change your mind later on).

Open another window on wherever the mp3 files are. If you're transferring to internal storage, there should already be a Music folder. If you're transferring to the external card, create a new folder (the normal Windows way) and name it Music or mp3 or whatever you'll recognize. (The name is for you, the phone doesn't care.)

Drag the files 3 or 4 at a time, to the folder in the phone. If you try to do too many at a time, the transfer may fail - USB isn't designed for high-volume file transfers. (Try copying a few thousand files at once and, aside from the fact that it'll take longer than you sleep at night, it'll probably fail after about 10 minutes.)

Once you've gotten them all transferred, restart the phone or run an app like Rescan Media. Copying files doesn't trigger the media scanner, so the new music won't show in your music players until the phone does a rescan.
