Battery dies in 5 hours. I'm ready to throw it off a wall

I have never in my life been so frustrated with a phone. I wasn't a huge fan even before 5.0, but after upgrading this phone has been next to worthless.

I have tried everything.. turning off wifi, bluetooth, location, installing juice defender. I barely use the thing and it is dead in 5 hours if I don't have it on a charger.

Other than rolling back to 4.4, what else can I do?

Just yesterday I was considering rolling back to Kit Kst due to terrible battery, lag and poor around performance.

However as a last ditch effort I done a factory reset, and it has been running like a dream all day today and battery life is much improved. No lag or stuttering present either.

if you have yet to try a cache clear in recovery Id suggest you give it a try & see if there is a difference.
Power down your phone, now press & hold the power button, volume up & the home button until your phone boots into Recovery. Now use the volume rocker to select Wipe Cache. Hit the power button to make it happen - give it a sec to clear the cache. Now use the volume rocker to select Reboot System - hit the power button & run you phone for a bit. See if this helps*

you can also place your phone in safe mode and run it for a little while and see if it's an app in the background sucking juice down :)

Battery Tips for Android

1. Toggle off High Accuracy GPS Mode, Bluetooth, NFC,
Hotspot/Tethering. Toggle on only as needed. (Set GPS Mode to "Battery
Saving" Mode).
2. Display Brightness - Turn off Auto Brightness and Reduce Setting
Bar to Minimum Acceptable to you.
3. Sign out of any unused Google Services like G+, Google Now, Hangouts, etc.
4. Disable Location Reporting and Location History.
5. Beware of constantly syncing in background Apps and Bloatware like
Facebook, Twitter, Weather Channel, Games, Google News/Weather,
Non-Push Email, etc. Set Sync interval for every 1 hour or more and
change settings to stop the syncing of data you don't need. Delete
their Apps and use their Web Page if acceptable.
6. Turn Off Hot Word "Hotword Detection" Always Listening Mode in
Google Search if you don't use it.
7. Turn Off Auto Camera/Photo Upload or at least set it for Upload on WIFI Only.
8. Turn Off Vibrate on Touch for Display, Keyboard, etc.
9. Turn Off Touch Sounds and Unlock Sounds.
10. Turn Off Ambient Display/Active Display Notifications if you don't need it.
11. Don't use a Live Wallpaper. Use a dark wallpaper if possible.
12. Set Display Sleep Setting to 2 Minutes or Less.
13. WIFI Settings - Advanced -
a. Network Notification - Set as OFF.
b. Scanning Always Available - Set as OFF.
c. Keep WIFI on during Sleep - Set as ALWAYS if you regularly use
WIFI. OK to keep WIFI on if you regularly use it.
14. Turn Off Always Vibrate in Gmail/Email.
15. Be careful of using too many Live Widgets and what/how often they sync.
16. Set MS Exchange Sync at 30 Days or Less if you use it.
17. Do NOT use a Task Killer App or Battery Saver App.
18. Uninstall ALL Apps that you never use. If you haven't used an
App in one month, uninstall it.
19. Reboot your phone at least once a month.
20. Wipe Cache Partition at least once a quarter or after every OS Update.
21. Consider a Factory Data Reset with a manual re-sync, manual
reinstall of all data and Apps after every major OS Letter Update.
Make sure that all of your data is first backed up to Google and
Dropbox, etc.

"I SUFFER NO HARDSHIPS DOING THIS" - this means that i personally am
giving up NOTHING with these tips. i'm not giving up any features.
there are no tradeoffs for me. a tradeoff or a hardship would be to
turn off PUSH email or use AIRPLANE mode during the day etc.

you have to find your own balance and the tips list is a start but you
must come to your own conclusion as to what's important. it's personal
preference but these are not a big deal to me at all as they do not
affect the function or operation of my phone. these tips do not
deteriorate my experience.

you don't HAVE TO do anything. the point is you if you want to
MAXIMIZE battery life you can turn things off that you aren't using.
it only makes sense. there is a FINITE amount of juice in ANY
battery. you choose how you want to spend that juice. by default most
of these devices have every feature set as ON whether you use them or
not. i prefer to change the settings in my phone to only use those
features that i personally use and need so i can maximize battery
life. i don't leave all the lights and TVs on in my house 24/7 - i
turn them on when i need them. i'm not giving anything up. my phone
does everything exactly like i want it to. i'm not missing out on
anything. it's no hardship for me. it's life. life is a delicate
balance. it's up to you to find that balance.

Thanks Systemofadown
I tried clearing the cache before and no luck. I also tried backing everything up via Kies and that didn't work either. I actually did it with samsung tech support controlling my computer, and they said the only option at this point was to send the phone back for them to fix in person which could take 2-3 weeks. Right like I can do without my phone for that long.

Thank you for the detailed reply... my issue is many of the features you mention are pivotal for me and I live to much "on the go" to haggle with setting these things on and off.

My concern is I had the same exact apps, same exact configuration as I do now with 4.4, and my battery lasted a day and a half without even trying. Now it lasts 5 hours? There is no possible way this should be a benchmark for Samsung.

You're very Welcome :). Just wish I could have helped more :(

I would still try putting my phone in safe mode for a little while. if one of your apps isn't playing well with lollipop you will know it's an app and then you can start narrowing them down and maybe save yourself a big headache sending your phone off to Samsung. while you're in safe mode don't open any apps and just use your phone a little bit for other things or just leave it be. if you get no battery drain then you can start narrowing down apps and maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the one that's acting up sometimes this helps.
Best of luck ;)

Is there an app that can track which apps are using the battery the most, or making the most calls to memory on the phone? THAT would be useful.

I am assuming it is some kind of memory leak in an app that isn't completely jiving with 5.0

I would bet there is an app that can better track other apps drain on your phone's resources but I'll have to dig a little bit to see if I can find a good one. looking at the normal battery usage graph, some apps will be hidden as Android system for example and so on when it's really an app in the background draining away...

edit to add facebook is a known Hog, have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling it?

this seems to be the most popular and helpful app for finding rogue apps.

Are you Humpty Dumpty and walk on a wall at all times and thus be able to throw your phone off a wall? If not, then revise the title! LOL!

Back k everything up and do a factory reset. Any massive update like the 5.0 is bound to leave cobwebs left behind. I can provide links to many many success stories via Pm that show how many times the FDR has solved battery issues.

VIA SONY BETA MAX

This usually does the trick, especially for the Verizon 5.0 update. Sux to factory reset, but once its done most users report a phone that's back up & running like new.

You can back up contacts to Gmail & then just use the old drag & drop method to save data such as pictures/video/music to your laptop. Some apps offer help here such as super backup.
