On my new S5, after tapping on the recent app button, it takes 3-4 seconds for the apps list to come up. On my friend's cheap lg it's instantaneous. Both running lollipop

Hello and welcome to Android Central red9350!

A couple of things you can try, to speed up a laggy phone, (especially some of the U.S. minority variants such as AT&T/Verizon), are wiping the cache partition and adjusting the animation speed as per #1.3 and #1.8 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

That's the April 2015 Lollipop build. I have to say, that the latest stock Samsung firmware on the much later Sept; 2015 build, Oi3 , are very, very, fast and lag free. It could be a combination of old an firmware based deodexed ROM with the xposed framework. You could always do a nandroid backup and flash...

Model SM-G900F
Model name GALAXY S5
Country United Kingdom
Version Android 5.0
Changelist 5508620
Build date Fri, 04 Sep 2015 00:10:44 +0000
Product code BTU
PDA G900FXXU1BOI3
CSC G900FOXA1BOI3

... to see if that makes a difference. I know it does for me and is the reason that I have stopped using custom ROMs.

Everything is still stock as of now. But tell me, if you open say 6 to 7 apps, (open them and let them load fully before pressing the home button), then tap the Recent button, how many seconds does it take to show the apps list?

1 second with 19 apps showing and 388MB of RAM still free.
