Samsung S5 - Moving between alpha input and symbols on the keyboard

Just got an S5 after being an iPhone user and finding it frustrating that when I move from inputting text to symbols (e.g. putting an exclamation mark at the end of a sentence), it doesn't automatically go back to alpha input when I hit the space bar. It did on my iPhone. It might be that this is just how it is but is there a way to force it (I've been through all the settings and can't see anything). Grateful for any advice and thanks in advance!

Try the SwiftKey Keyboard. Long-pressing an alpha key gives a symbol for most keys, so you don't have to shift. (And there are Apple-style keyboards in the play store too - I don't know how accurately they mimic the iPhone keyboard, though.)
