Re: Galaxy S5 Verizon SM-G900V
Android 6.0.1
Baseband version G900VVRU2DPD1

I upgraded from Lollipop to Marshmallow in early May.
I cleared the phone cache.
I have not done a factory reset. Prefer to avoid due to the amount of time to reinstall and or restore everything.
The phone has been working well.

I have only recently tried to scan for and pair a new bluetooth device.
The phone does not find the new device.
(Other bluetooth-equipped devices do find the new device.)
Bluetooth devices installed/paired prior to the Marshmallow upgrade are still installed and working fine.

Would appreciate input on what needs to be done to get the phone to scan successfully for new bluetooth devices.

I solved the problem by clearing the bluetooth cache. It wasn't easy to find. Here are the steps.

Settings/Applications/Application Manager
Dropdown to Show All Apps
Select menu at upper right
Select Show system apps
Select Bluetooth Share
Force Stop
Long-press Storage. Storage window appears.
Select Clear Cache.

There was no need to clear bluetooth data.

Bluetooth scan now works.
