I purchased my S6 Active at full retail to avoid a contract. I know its an ATT exclusive but I also understand that there is some type of ownership relationship between ATT and Cricket. Can I use a Cricket SIM in the S6 Active? Will I lose any functionality compared to using ATT - assuming I don't care about any of the ATT-specific programs loaded on the phone)?

Thanks

You should be able to -- You just may need to get the phone unlocked but since you paid full retail that shouldn't be an issue.

AT&T branded devices work on Cricket without unlocking.

Cricket branded devices need to be unlocked to use on AT&T.

I know it's weird, because AT&T owns Cricket, but I confirmed that information by chatting with an AT&T rep.
