I have my lock screen set not to ask for a pin number when I'm at home. It seems like it asks for a pin number whenever it feels like it. I've changed the settings to no avail

Welcome to Android Central! You're talking about Trusted Places from the Smart Lock feature, right? Is your GPS turned on, or is the phone's Location service on Battery Saving mode (i.e., using only cell signal and wi-fi)? If it's latter, then the phone's location won't be as precise, and in fact the location can be off by several hundred meters, depending on your cell tower. This may place it outside the accepted radius for Trusted Places, and therefore the phone will think it's not in a Trusted Place.
