Is there a way to send sounds from the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge to the speakers in the 2012 Honda Pilot without having the mode selector on the Pilot set to Bluetooth?

I realize I can connect my phone via Bluetooth to the car and play media from the phone through the stereo and over the speakers in the car. I would like to be able to have the phone interrupt the car radio for some alerts much like it will when there is an incoming phone call. For example, when running the app Waze, I would like Waze to be able to send voice alerts over the car stereo speakers. There are other apps that I would like to be able to do this as well.

I'm wondering how the phone can do it but the apps cannot. Is there a setting on the phone or in the car that needs to be changed?

Thank you,
