Hi,

Okay so my dad wants to get into the security option in his phone to add a fingerprint, however to do so required the backup password.

Knowing my dad, he had forgotten the password and cannot get in here, the only suggestion we have found is reset your phone which obviously is a bit last resort.

I have found some suggestions I. e. sign in your Google account however that did not work nor did a suggestion which was to go in private mode and from there it will prompt the fingerprint and make that default.

so my question is how do I restart the password?

In theory, if there is a back up password, that means there's already a fingerprint registered. Unfortunately if the fingerprint that's registered is not there and the back up password has been forgotten, for security reasons the only way to get it to reset is to wipe the phone.

If he still can access the phone via PIN/password lockscreen, I suggest you back everything up and then reset the phone to register the fingerprint.
