Why won't my email recycle bin counter reset to zero?

Email Recycle Bin Counter Won't reset to Zero

I am using the standard email app on my Galaxy S6. I have two email addresses set up on it. When I empty the recycle bin for each address, the counter won't reset to zero. It just reverts to the same number each time, even though the app says the bin is empty. Can anyone help with this?

Clear the apps cache is where I would start. Next of that fix it, check that email folder via computer. Make sure it's actually being deleted from the server.

Apps cache clearing made no difference. I'm not sure if clearing the server makes a difference. The counter worked fine up until about a week ago and I am not doing anything different. I don't sync the email client with Outlook, which I use on my desktop (except that I sync the Outlook calendar with the stock calendar on the S6, as I have always done). Not even sure how I would clear the server of old messages but will look on the ISP website.
