Can't see Samsung S6 on MacBook Air

I am running Yosemite 10.10.4 on my Mac and 5.0.2 on Samsung Galaxy S6. I would like to transfer music to my Android via USB. My Android device settings have it connected as a media device. I have installed Android File Transfer on to my Mac, however, no matter what I restart, my Mac or my Android, I always get the message "Could not connect to device. Try reconnecting or starting your device". And the S6 does not show in Finder as being connected. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Android File Transfer. I do not have Kies installed on my Mac. I have successfully used SmartSwitch to back up my phone onto my Mac so I'm assuming the USB cable is working. I've gone through many posts on many forums and the suggestions re USB settings on my phone for USB and uninstalling Kies are what I see. What am I missing?
