Why is junk email always coming through to my S6?

Junk Email always coming through to s6

On my s6, my email was working perfectly fine on the stock client, then about 6 weeks ago, it started pulling in everything that was going to my junk mail folder(from outlook). I have deleted the email account on the computer and phone, multiple times, but still the junk emails come through. I'm getting like 400 junk emails per day. I use GoDaddy as our server and they block out the majority of the emails as I can see them in the junk folder on my computer, but everything in that junk folder comes through to my phone....It's essentially syncing the junk folder and inbox instead of JUST the inbox.......ughhhhh the frustration!!!!! Please, anyone, HELP!!!!

Do you have POP3 or IMAP: service with GoDaddy?
Is this account a private domain you get from GoDaddy, like xxxyyzz@mydomain.com?
Are you still using the stock email app?
Or the Gmail app?
Or something else?

It's POP3, it's our own business domain...same problem started happening to all our S6's recently. Still using the stock app and don't want to change that. Problem never occurred before, just started randomly and now is annoying AF!

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

With POP3 service there's no simple solution. I'll try to explain...

Email must be left on the server so that each employee can download it. If it's deleted from the server before some of the employees download the email, then some will not see it, obviously, it's gone. So just leave email on the server, right? Well, normally, leaving email on the server is no problem. Other than space it takes up on the mailserver it's ok and in these days of multi-terabyte drives even that isn't much of a problem.

Here's where you problem comes in: The email client should know what it's downloaded before and not download previous email again even though it's still sitting on the server. It should pick up only the new email. However, the default email client that comes on Samsung phones, which is supplied by Samsung, not Google/Android, has always been kinda buggy and the infestation appears to be getting worse on new versions instead of better. Your Samsung email clients are not communicating properly with the mailserver regarding picking up on read/unread flags. It's possible it could be a bug in the mailserver software (nothing's impossible) but very unlikely. In all likelyhood the problem is on your end, not GoDaddy's.

As for what you can do...

1. Join the 21st century and convert your POP3 service to IMAP. This is by far the best solution. There are many advantages to IMAP service over POP3.
2. Contact GoDaddy tech support and see if they will work wiith you to troubleshoot the problem. With luck, maybe they will get involved. If you're really lucky, maybe they can find a fix.
3. Use a different email client.
4. Contact Samsung and see if they can offer any help. Lotsa luck with that one.

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

While I respect your opinion, I'm not sure if it's correct. We've been using Samsung phones for a while now, and just lately, one by one they started doing this. The email client isn't continually looking for new emails per say, the problem is that it is syncing the junk mail folder on outlook. How it is that one day it doesn't sync the junk folder, and the next day it does? I agree with you that the default email client is completely terrible, but I haven't found another one that works well either that is free, any suggestions?

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

I missed one thing, went right by me...You said it's syncing the Junk folder over and over and the Inbox, not just the Inbox. Yet you say it's POP3 service. Doesn't make sense because POP3 service doesn't support syncing of folders, you have to have IMAP service for that. POP3 only supports fetching email to the Inbox and deletion of mail on the server when deleted on the mail client aka your phone or computer. No other folders can be synced with POP3, that's one of it's major drawbacks. So I don't know what the deal is...

Anyway, a good free email client would be K-9:

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

just checked to be 100% sure, it's definitely a POP3 account. So yes, it does sync both the inbox and the junk mail folder. So, while i don't see the junk mail on my computer because it separates it automatically, for some reason, everything in my junk folder comes to my phone. There has to be a way to unsync the junk mail folder.

If I am understanding you properly, everything seems to be working properly. When the email goes to your computer, your junk filter grabs it and puts it in your junk folder. If your computer is off, everything is holding in your inbox so when your phone downloads it gets everything. As stated above, there is no synching in any other folder besides the inbox from the ISP or Exchange server you are popping with.

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

So what would be the solution? For example, this is what happens. Say, Viagra sends me an email, obviously it's spam and goes into my junk folder on my outlook. I NEVER see this email on my computer when I'm in outlook, webmail, etc, which is great! However, the email still comes through to my phone as if it's a legit email. To mean, this means that my phone is not only syncing my email inbox(which is good) but it is also syncing my junk mail folder too(which is bad). Again, using POP3. Everything was working fine and then one day the junk emails just started pouring in. Now I'm spending 30 mins a day deleting junk emails off my phone.

And if I am understanding you properly, I agree with dpomerance. AFAIK you have 3 ways to deal with this:

1. As I said before, convert the POP3 service to IMAP. This is the best solution and I highly recommend it if possible.

2. Next best is to forward your POP3 account to Gmail for handling. Setup filters in Gmail and email and folders will sync. To get Sent email to sync, you'll have to setup an alias in Gmail for sending, so email appears to have come from the POP3 account although sent through Gmail. Not a perfect solution, a kludge really, but this will give you most of the the advantages of IMAP service with your POP3 account.
Some of the advantages of IMAP are:
Filtering and sorting into folders can be setup and done on the server and everything syncs to all your devices and computers.
Because everything syncs, setup of filters and sorting only has to be done one time instead of repeating it on every device and computer.
All email is kept on the server so you download only as much email as you need to your phone, but all email is available if you need it.
You can get Push notification of new email.

3. Last choice. There is only one Android email client I'm aware of that can do sorting of POP3 email on the device, like a desktop email client does, after fetching email, by defining filters (aka rules) by email addresses, keywords, etc. That is Maildroid. There is even a spam plug-in available for an extra charge.
https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../store/apps/d...aildroid&hl=en&token=dHHH-OJo
No other clients I've seen support on-device filtering. This is because it's space, data and system-intensive to do it on your phone.

So Maildroid can filter spam from your Inbox. But it's $13 + the spam plug-in, if desired. And since you would still be using POP3 service...you would still be missing all the other advantages of IMAP.

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

I appreciate the help, truly, but this still won't work unless I switch to IMAP. I'm still not 100% sure you understand what I'm asking as your comment states that 'maildroid can filter spam from your inbox'....I'm not looking to do that at all, I want everything from my inbox to come though, what I don't want coming though to the phone is everything from the junk folder.

BTW, I'm fairly certain now that this may not be a phone issue. I downloaded two other mail apps, K9 as you suggested and blue mail, both still brought in the junk mail. So, it's quite possible that it's GoDaddy.

Again before 5 weeks ago, this would never happen, so yes, the phone can decipher what is the junk folder and what is the inbox, something was just 'switched off of it'. If you check out other forums, there are so many people with this same problem dating back almost 4 years. The solution was always to delete the email account off the phone and re-add it, but this no longer works.

I'm out of options guys unless I switch to IMAP which I don't want to do.....any other ideas?

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

I'll try this once more...If you still don't think I have it right after reading this post, then go to this webpage, scroll down a bit to 'POP3' and read it. I'll try to give a more detailed explanation below the link.

http://www.msoutlook.info/question/54

What dpomerance said was correct. With POP3 there is no syncing of anything except the Inbox, and deletions with the server. ALL incoming email is downloaded to your phone or computer. Any email client, when using POP3, fetches all incoming email, junk and all, because that's normal POP3 behavior. Junk filtering is then done locally by the email client. Outlook is doing that on your computer, filtering junk and sending it to the junk folder.

However, there's a chance of an exception. Some service providers may offer junk filtering at the server, even with POP3. I've used GoDaddy for years, but IMAP, so I can't tell if GoDaddy has POP3 junk filtering or not. It's kinda unusual to have it though, because with POP3 it's normally assumed junk filtering will be done by the local email client. That's because obviously, if junk is filtered on the server, and since the junk folder on the server does NOT sync to the computer or phone, then the only way to see what's been sent to junk on the server is to login to webmail.

Anyway, since all email is downloaded and junk is handled locally, I don't see how this is a GoDaddy problem. Unless...GoDaddy was doing junk filtering and it quit a few weeks ago, causing the increase in junk email. And if they were, who was checking the junk for legitimate emails in junk by mistake?

Again, just to be clear, the junk folder on the server - IF there is one - does NOT sync to the junk folder on your computer. The junk folder on the computer only has email filtered out on the computer by the email client.

Now, I don't know what your objection is to using IMAP, but seriously, once you go IMAP you never go back. It's particularly good for mobile devices.

Login to your webmail. See if there is a junk folder and if so, any recent email in it.

Android since v1.0. Linux since 2001.

Re: Junk Email always coming through to s6

Gmail and Bellsouth both do spam filtering but you need to check the junk folders, USING YOUR WEBMAIL INTERFACE, to see what has been accumulated in your junk mail. Sounds to me like whatever spam checking Go Daddy was doing for you is now having a problem. You might look at your webmail interface and find things you have been looking for that got trapped as spam if you have never checked it.
