Timer sound and text notification

I have an s6. I am an instructor and I use my timer everyday as part of my instruction. In order to have the timer alarm I have to keep my text notifications turned on also. This was never an issue with the s5. I can't have my text notification going off during class but I really want to use my timer. Is there any way to get around this? This is a work phone so it has no special modifications or anything done to it.
