How do I remove my photos and videos from my S6 without deleting them from my google photos?

I read that if I remove my original pictures from my S6, all those pictures will be removed from my google photos as I am interacting with the cloud--instead of just my android phone. But I need to clear up some space on my 64gb phone. Please help!!!

Welcome to Android Central! Open your Google Photos app, swipe in from the left, and tap Device Folders. Select the photo or video in question, tap the Menu button, and tap Delete Device Copy. This will keep them in your Google Photos cloud.
