Dead Pixel Issues and Continued Terrible Video Recording Quality

Anyone else had any issues with dead pixels?

15 days after my phone arrived. (i.e. a day after the auto-warranty return period was up) my S7 Edge developed three dead pixels. This shouldn't be too much of an issue, as a guy at Sprint is replacing my phone with a brand new one (because 'there aren't any refurbed ones available yet - so you got lucky'.) But I would be royally pissed if I had to take a refurbed phone 15 days after picking it up.

Secondly, after another trip out, my video quality was crap. Again. All filmes in 1080p 60fps (FHD60)
(Make sure you switch the setting to 1080p60 on the Youtube quality cog to get the accurate high quality video)

In both cases, blockiness is really pronounced. Like it's being heavily compressed. Sony sensor.



Please don't tell me 'that's youtube upload quality' as a) it is nothing to do with it (it is exactly the same quality on the phone) and b) i'll assume you work for Samsung, as that's all they kept saying as an excuse when I raised it with them.

I am HOPING that somehow this is just a problem with my phone, and when i get the dead pixel handset replaced, I will have a phone with significantly improved video. It seems crazy this will be a single phone issue, but I'm hoping, as it's a superb phone other than that, and I'm getting to like the camera, despite the over-saturation in bright vs dark scenes.

Sorry you're having issues with your phone. I haven't had any with mine so far (since T-Mobile launch, so almost a month), and video seems to be OK. Never have recorded at 60fps, just full HD and it doesn't seem bad.

And just because you mentioned it, nope, I don't work with Samsung. But nope, your phone's video is NOT the same quality as the YouTube version. Yes, resolution and framerate might be the same, but YouTube compresses video no matter what. Only if you have a Google Drive 'original file' backup will it be the exact same compression, but otherwise, it's a further compressed copy (albeit an usually very efficient one).

That being said, YouTube quality does tend to be crappier during the first few minutes after uploading, because it's optimizing the compression (don't think this is the case because usually during that period you can only select 480p as the playback quality). Also, does the 'choppiness' appear in your phone's screen when watching the original video file or just while watching the YouTube copy? Are you recording to internal memory or SD Card (the latter could cause dropped frames and lost data if the SD card isn't fast enough)?

I should have clarified - I'm not arguing that YouTube *does* compress, I'm just arguing that people/Samsung seem to think I'm only complaining about the video when it's on YouTube. I originally notice the terrible quality on the phone, then upload to YouTube to share examples, and it recreates the blockiness/artifacting pretty much perfectly. Also, yes, I use Drive/Photos so can view original version on there too.

Yours doesn't seem to have the same issue, but then the video is very different. I'd be intrigued to see how it looks in FHD with large amounts of lights and darks in one picture.

Interestingly I found this FHD60 clip on YouTube which has similar enough amounts of blue sky to my vids with no blockiness evident.. but this video suffers from a few frame skips/stutters (see 16 second mark etc) that other users have complained about (but I've only experienced during slowmo video)...so the issues seem inconsistent across phones

I see what your saying. Yeah, I'm not happy with the quality either. Hope they can fix this with an update.....and soon....

I got my phone 2 weeks and found a couple of dead pixels at the bottom. Tried to exchange but they're out of stock everywhere
