Why doesn't the screen turn off when i put my cover over?

So, leading up to today, when i have closed the cover on my Samsung galaxy s7 edge the screen has turned off, but it stopped working today. Now the screen just remains turned on behind the cover, it is really annoying please help.

Welcome to Android Central! Is this an official Samsung flipcover, or a 3rd party case? Check to see if the smartcover sensor is still working on the phone by passing a magnet over the bezel (that's how most smartcovers usually work). If the screen never turns off after passing the magnet over the entire bezel, then the smartcover sensor might have failed. If the screen does turn off, then the embedded magnet in the flipcover might have become dislodged.
