How to stop Galaxy s7 not giving message notifications when in the messaging app?

Hi, I've got a Samsung Galaxy S7 and I've noticed that when I'm messaging someone in the messaging app any new messages don't get a notification or alert sound. I understand this is probably because it assumes you will see it but often if I'm concentrating on what typing or not paying attention I will miss messages then don't know I've ever received them because there is no notification symbol. Does anyone know if there is a setting or way to change this? Thanks a lot

I couldn't find a solution for my S6 Edge. Don't know if it's a Samsung thing but it sure is inconvenient
