Phone heating and battery draining

I have had my S3 for about two months now and am starting to have serious problems with my battery. The phone is heating up and the battery is draining very fast. I am charging the phone at night when it is completely off and within two hours after i turned on the phone i am left with 45% battery power. My wifi is usually turned off. Only the email is on and a small animated background. I have tried several apps to look for the problems including gsam and it says only 5% of the battery usage is being used whereas 40% is being used by the email and only 2% by the background.
Could it be a battery problem? Should i buy a new battery and see if it helps or should i bring my phone to repair?
Any suggestions?

seems like a problem with the email. set it to update manualy and see if the problem persists.
also, get a temperature widget and tell us how hot its getting
