Need help with Samsung Galaxy S3 data usage

I recently bought a new unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 and have net yet inserted a sim card, and therefore cannot access 3G. However, when I check my data usage, I've already used more than a gigabyte of data. My friend also has an S3, and only uses wifi, and has no data usage recorded. Why is this happening?

You've not inserted a sim, so how have you been using the phone?

I've just been using the internet and apps and things, not calling and texting. Most newer phones work without a sim card, I think.
