Scratch Yet?
you knew this was coming, right?

i've had my tab for over a month with a case, but no screen protector. i actually have a screen protector in-waiting, but have been too lazy to put it on. got it the same time as the case. hope i've not just jinxed myself.
i've taken it to paris for a week and back. i have three other family members sharing it on-and-off, and still no scratch. but, we do try to not abuse it with dirty fingers, greasy but not gritty.
how about you all? scratch or no scratch with your naked tab? - 08-23-2011, 11:14 AM #2
Re: Scratch Yet?
Some people insist they don't need a protector but when something costs this much and is being moved around and used this much...I don't see a reason not to throw a protector on the screen just for some extra insurance. I bought a 5 pack on eBay for $10, has a decent feel to it and put it on the moment I received it.
So I do have a scratch on the protector...but not on my screen. - 08-23-2011, 11:54 AM #3
Re: Scratch Yet?
I have no issues (yet). Mine is naked and I've had it for about a month. I may get a Samsung case, but that is it.
Please use the Thanks button below and to the right. - 08-23-2011, 02:50 PM #4
Re: Scratch Yet?
I've had mine since June 17, with no screen protector, and have had no problems.
I do use the Samsung book cover case, and leather pouch (depending on my mood) to transport my Tab back and forth to work.
I don't like protectors because they make the device look ugle (in my opinion). It is also my understanding the Tab uses Gorilla Glass? Based on this I conclude that normal wear and tear should not harm it in anyway. - 08-23-2011, 05:08 PM #5

Re: Scratch Yet?
I have a screen protector on mine. Better safe than sorry. It's inexpensive protection, and I've always been a fan of BodyGuardz screen protectors. Only way people know it's there is if I tell them.

Re: Scratch Yet?
It's Gorilla Glass, so no screen protector here. I've had my Evo since they first came out, also GG, and not a scratch on it.

Steinheil makes really nice protectors. Gorilla glass can, and will, scratch.

LOL... Can't believe their are still people that think the eVo has Gorilla Glass... Even after both Corning and HTC have both stated that not one eVo ever shipped with Gorilla Glass. And I've seen a couple eVo's with some really nasty scratches on their screens.
Now to the topic at hand... Gorilla Glass will and does scratch, it takes alot for it to scratch... But it will scratch.
The way I look at it, and this goes for ever electronic item I own that I can take out of my house... These things cost a lot of money... And regardless of what income bracket your in... money is still money. And protecting your investment is important. I got my Tab at Sprint and I bought the Belkin case(the big one), then I walked over to the Verizon store and got the Belkin screen protector for it. Went home and install the screen protector, stuffed my Tab in the case and haven't taken it out since. But that's me... To each their own right.
To the OP, it's your Tab, your investment so it's your call in the end. I wouldn't go by what other people do. Choose for yourself

Yeah, they say it is now, but for months when it came out both Corning and HTC were saying no, so I understand why the other guy is saying that.
Keys have a tough time scratching Gorilla Glass. Any type of sand scratches it just about as easily as regular glass. That's pretty easy to have happen if you do anything but sit in an office all day. - 08-24-2011, 07:18 AM #14
Re: Scratch Yet?
HTC always claimed it did. People on the Internet didn't trust them, and Corning finally settled the issue. I guess his LOL is on him
Same thing, I might add, happened with the Tab. Samsung said it had GG, nobody believed it, and it was finally settled, what, last week? Part of the problem has been that Customer Service reps have given conflicting info when questioned about the topic...you know: the same people who tell you that the answer to all your problems is just a factory reset away.
Not saying a screen cover isn't required, but depending on your use scenarios. Personally, I would never take a Tab to the beach. Never mind the screen, sand WILL find its way into your device, and the heat isn't too friendly to electronics either...but that's just me.Last edited by PookiePrancer; 08-24-2011 at 08:24 AM.

I thought HTC hadn't claimed it in the beginning either, but I could be wrong.
Sand and grit is in a lot of places. Just with routine use, most will end up with a few scratches. The only ones who don't either baby their phones like few others, or have screen protectors. Some good quality ones are made so well that you can't even tell they're there. Zagg is not one of those. I don't know how people still use that brand, they are downright horrible.
I buy my phones off contract and sell them when I want a new one, plus I'm in construction, so screen protectors are necessary for me. - 08-24-2011, 09:14 AM #16
Re: Scratch Yet?
I haven't put one on mine but I will say this: My Charge and XOOM both had Gorilla Glass and they both got scratches on them. Nothing is invincible.

Re: Scratch Yet?
invisible shield just because it helps with fingerprints. Still have the protective plastic that comes on the back

Re: Scratch Yet?
But again...back to the topic. Regardless of what effort some insist it takes to scratch, the OP scratched his tab while there was no screen protector on it.
So if you want to do what you can with little effort to keep your expensive piece of electronics from becoming scratched, put a protector on it. They're cheap...so a few bucks to save you the disappointment down the road...just throw one on. Even if it has a slightly different feel to it, you'll get used to it quickly and it won't effect the experience. - 08-24-2011, 10:46 AM #19
Re: Scratch Yet?
Oh heck yeah! In your line of work I'd have the thing in a shield, AND a case! And you're right, Zagg sucks these days; they used to be better.
I travel the world, but I'm AR with my stuff. Like I said: Evo for over a year, and it's still flawless. Even my two year old Palm Pre still looks new.Last edited by PookiePrancer; 08-24-2011 at 10:53 AM.

Yeah, everything's in cases too. Sagging Invisibleshields were great when nothing else was really around. Now, just about everything else out there is better. The only thing keeping them going is their deal with Best Buy. It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever use one of those POS's again.

@ SouthPhilly
Hey, I'm sorry I came across so harshly; I really am. It's just that when you laugh at someone's supposed ignorance...you'd better be sure you're right, know what I mean? - 08-26-2011, 06:24 PM #22
I ordered a screen protector when I first purchased it, but never installed it.
I've been contemplating if I will need it. I always keep it in the case, and I'm very careful when using it. I'm sure within 2 years I will probably end up with a newer tablet.

My big thing is why risk it. I have a Steinheil on mine and you'd never even know. I think many don't like them because of experiences with bad quality protectors. Spend a bit extra, get a good one, and forget about it. What's $20 after spending $400-500 on a tablet?

No problem m8.... It's the Internet and a forum.... Not real life.... Only really lost a few seconds of rest over it, then the mes kicked in and.... Good night!!!!
Maybe later builds of the eVo had/have Gorilla Glass, it was never mentioned on there site till the 004 builds started shipping.
