ICS Promised By End of March

I read in December/January that Samsung will upgrade their Galaxy Tabs by Q1. Hasn't happened and doesn't look like happening. This is sick Samsung. You already have the builds (proof: ICS is working on 10.1 2)

I think Asus it is for certain from here on.

Patience people! They will push the update after their new ICS tablets are out for a bit. No big deal. If something this stupid enrages you...well talk about first world problems!

Gosh I hate this kind of attitude. This is a forum about Android devices; of course it will have first world problems! If you don't like dealing with people complaining about first world problems then you should frequent forums about something other than what is currently the fastest moving tech industry.

I disagree completely. People visit technology forums to help out other users and to learn tips and tricks for their devices. These forums were not established to be a massive whining session for entitled brats. If there were any decent moderators on these forums they would start nuking every new whiny thread addressed to Samsung. They do nothing to promote the culture of support and advice here.

Yet it is quite disingenious to call the problems exposed in these forums "first world problems" in a dismissive way. That's what bothers me.

Seriously though, it is a business strategy for Samsung to push new devices with the latest platform before updating existing tech. This is not something new that Samsung just sprung on all of its customers. If you really can't wait and are jealous that your buddy is sporting ICS on his shiny new tablet, then go buy one.

Personally, I'm looking forward to ICS, but am still thrilled with the current OS and what I can do with my 10.1 today. I hate to see this community get snippy with each other. People will always gripe on these forums, but in the next breath they are helping newbies with questions. Such is forum life....

In December, Samsung promised a first-quarter Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for its Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II devices. Sammy just started sending Ice Cream Sandwich to some of its Galaxy S II phones -- a Gingerbread-flavored version of Ice Cream Sandwich, anyway -- but the company coyly reneged on its promise to push ICS to the heavily marketed Note before the end of Q1, telling customers last week that it was "proud to announce" a second-quarter ICS rollout for the device.

Samsung has given no specific time estimates for any of its other ICS-confirmed devices, including the Galaxy R, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, and various Galaxy Tab models.

Me personally I am looking forward to the update but don't really care when it comes. It's not like there is something i want to do with my tablet and I can't.

Well I hate the attitude displayed toward Samsung simply because they aren't pushing the ICS update on YOUR timetable. The tantrums are just ridiculous. I read on another site that they delayed the release because the update was causing battery life issues. Seriously, it's nothing to throw a fit over. Some people would rather waste their time getting enraged over stuff like this instead of enjoying the awesome tablet they have, and I am guessing if they move on to another brand it won't take long until they find something about that brand to throw a tantrum over too.

I honestly love Samsung but it does seem they are a little slow on updates compared to other oems. I mean look at ASUS and Acer, they both have tabs out right now with ICS so Samsung really has no excuse to not have ICS ready for their first ever honeycomb tab. I can't wait to get ICS for my sgt10.1

Lets be real here people, it would be amazing if ICS was ready for the tab now, I have the Nexus and ICS is awesome and i cant wait for it to be on my tab. However the complexity that goes into making a product that is stable enough to sell to the public is amazing (there will always be bugs with something even with testing). They are working to put ICS on not just one device like apple has to but many different devices with many different specs. When they say "by the first quarter of 2012" they arent giving that as an exact date, it is an estimation. So what if they send it out after, the simple fact remains that we all have a tablet that is working and also most of us probably have a great android phone as well so lets not be too concerned with it not having the latest software on it yet.

It is important to wait until Samsung feels that it's ready.

ASUS has been a little too aggressive with ICS and it caused quite a few problems with the transformer tablets. There are still users with dysfunctional tablets as a result.

This real issue is the lack of transparency and openness on Samsung's part. They don't need to commit to delivery dates but if they were open and shared what they are doing, it would go a long way towards calming the masses. I do want ICS for my GT10.1 and what is happening here is nothing different than what happened with the Samsung Vibrant and to an extent, the Galaxy S-II which I also have. That is, no communications between Samsung and the user base.

I have the Wifi version, and I have to admit, this device was VERY easy to root compared to most of the other Android devices I've owned.

If you REALLY want ICS, you can have it running on your device literally in less than an hour (possibly more if you include backing up and restoring data). Honestly, it took me just about as much time to install on my tablet as it did to download and install the latest official update.

I understand the points people make about Samsung not delivering on update promises are valid, and I also never advocate recommending people to root devices against their will (or without proper understanding of the risks involved), but the fact still remains that if you REALLY want ICS, it can be easily loaded onto this device, which is more than you can say for most other devices out there.

What I did:
- Root
- Backup with Titanium
- Create backup in CWM
- Flash new ICS ROM (w/ Gapps)
- Boot, log into Google and wait for apps to download/install
- Restore missing apps and data from Titanium

ICS running with all my apps in about an hour and a half.

I don't see why people get so irritated by the update timeline on android. There is only one thing I'm seriously wishing I had on my tab. Google chrome. Other than that, it looks nearly identical, especially with touchwiz.

Go play with a motorola xoom that's been updated and you'll see what I mean. It's a matter of weeks or maybe a few months. I don't mind. If updating is that important to you, then root. If you don't know how to root or aren't willing to, then you probably won't see/care about the diference anyway...
