Maybe a dumb adaptor questions

I have a refurb Galaxy Tab 10.1. I bought a set of connector adaptors -- the ones where one allows connecting an SD card and the other allows a normal connection. Both work great. But, after putting my music collection on a thumb drive, it dawned on me that there are two issues.

1) Music players recognize the extra drive, but file managers don't access it to move files back and forth. So, unless I want to permanently take up more space on the device, I have to leave my music on a card or thumb drive. And I can't easily transfer documents back and forth. Is there an easy way to move files between card or thumb drive and the Tab?

2) With multimedia files on a drive plugged into the connector slot, they play. But that uses battery, with no way to keep it charged at the same time. Will the Tab &/or the USB adaptor handle connecting some kind of "V" cable so one part goes to a charger, while the other allows connecting a thumb drive? Would that cause damage?
