I think I may be going crazy but I have been able to do this consistently on my tab 32gb gray. I came across this trying to get into bootloader mode and thought I messed up my tab.
After powering down my tab I can press and hold the power button + volume up button for 5 seconds after that the only way to turn on my device is to press and hold the power button + volume down at the same time and after 3 seconds releasing my finger off of volume down button continuing to hold power button for 3 additional seconds then releasing power button.
I apologize if I have confused anyone (I know I am horrible at explaining things). I will post a video of this if possible.
Please let me know if anyone else can duplicate this weird psuedo-bricked mode so I know if I need to take my unit back.
