Questions on which Tablet I need

I'd like to know if the Amazon Fire would be a significant improvement for me. I don't have a lot of money, and I use everything I get until they fall apart or stop working. Currently, I'm using a first generation iPad (like bought within the first month). I use it mostly for reading books and comics (almost exclusively, although the occasional game that works I'll play). Since my tablet is so old, I'm wondering if the Fire would be a significant improvement for me. I'm not worried about it's physical size (it's slightly smaller but much clearer), but am concerned about performance? Will I notice a difference, or will it only be incremental?
Any advice would be appreciated.

What's your price range? You can find decent tablets from good manufacturers like Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo for <$100. Also check out sites like Dailysteals.com, woot.com, Techrabbit.com, and Groupon Goods for deals on refurbished tablets.
