Default Tab 2 turns itself back on.

Ever since a firmware update the Tab turns itself right back on after I turn it off. Does this constantly.

You can try clearing the cache in recovery. Here is how: [Guide] Rebooting into Recovery Mode for the Galaxy S2, S3, and Tab2.

If that doesn't work, I would try a factory reset.

I tried a factory reset before when it first started. I try the cache thing but it only goes to a screen to download another ROM.

Did you press volume up for the process?

Yes but volume up only cancels download and restarts the Tab.

I did that like I told you and it comes up with an option to download a new OS. No other choice.

I tried it a couple of times and each time it did the same with the error and reboot.

Thanks for trying. You are the only one. Guess I will have to call Samsung tech support. I was hoping to avoid that!

I have the same issue after the latest update. Power off and then the tablet restarts itself. Can't turn off. Have to let the battery die. Not good.

I gave up and called tech support and they sent me a UPS label to send it in for service.

We have been having the same problem. So far, the only workaround we can figure out is to plug it in during the split second between shutdown and restart. This seems to trick the tablet and it will stay shutdown even after you unplug it. It also seems to work if you insert the plug into the tablet btw shutdown and restart even if the plug is not connected to power. Certainly not a solution but at least a temporary workaround until someone comes up with a real solution.

I have had limited success by turning the power off IMMEDIATELY after it restarts. Not all of the time but about 80%.

I hope that a fix is coming soon!

In order to open the Odin screen to perform factory reset you need to hold the volume DOWN button (the one closer to the power button). Hold both power and volume down, when samsung logo appears release power. that will do it BUT performing the factory reset will NOT fix the re-start problem (believe me, I tried already). I guess they will have to release a patch soon.

    HELP!!! HELP!!
I too am in the same boat as many of the posters here. My Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 inch got the update and will NOT shut down. It just reboots every single time. Frustrating!!

I have tried to plug it in during the shut down process to no avail. It does not help.
I will try the power button/Volume down or up procedure to clear cache and reboot to see if this will help.

I even did a factory reset and it STILL boots right back up!!!! You can NOT travel on a plane with a tablet that will not power down. I also like to turn my tablet OFF if I am NOT using it for a while.

I am SERIOUSLY regretting updating the tablet.

I see this issue is widespread (just google it and many people are posting about it) and I am frankly madder than hell right now that Samsung has not given us a solution to this issue.

I don't want to send my tablet away for service like one poster here has had to do. SERIOUSLY????? How about mailing him a NEW tablet????

Sorry.......but I am just frustrated as I can be right now.

EDITED TO ADD: I have been on the phone with Samsung (phone # for those interested--1-800-726-7864---24/7 service for tablets) tech and he had me do a data wipe and a factory reset while holding the power and down volume button and long story short it is STILL not acting right so a shipping label is being sent and I have to mail it to Texas for service. To say I am not happy is an understatement. This was not happening before the OS upgrade. Very disappointing.

I called Samsung and at least they told me that they are aware of the problem and working on a patch fix. There should be a downloadable patch soon.

My Samsung Tab 2 10.1 rebooted automatically (continuously) after the Jellybean update. I fixed it by going into All APPS and selecting the Samsung Push Services. I uninstalled the update for this and also cleared the cache. I rebooted the device and then it reinstalled the update for Push Services. No more rebooting. The device now shuts down normally.

    Hope it helps you.

Mine appears to do the same - both on AC and standalone
The 4.2.2 update was installed a week or so ago. And now another update is available and will download but not install.
As far as shutting down .......
Mine goes through a off-on-off sequence - if I wait it seems to really turn off. Like leaving my in-laws house. Everyone has one more thing to do or say!
First, it shuts down, but not off: a dim backlight is still present.
    Finally it goes black.
Next the "Samsung 2 etc logo appears for a bit..
Then it reboots with the sound effects and all into the logon screen.
If I ignore it after a few seconds it goes black ( no backlight like the initial shutdown)
I guess it has really shutdown this time. Or is it in a standby mode?

Thanks for the pointer. I'm always willing to try something - but unfortunately, it didn't work either (twice... followed above sequence). Still on my quest to find a simple solution to this very stupid Samsung software problem.

I've posted this in a couple other threads, but thought it might catch someone's eye here.

The latest firmware update seems to solve the problem. The trick is to get the firmware to install because that requires the tablet to shut down during the process.

I finally got the firmware to update .... by using the "won't shut down" workaround mentioned in various threads:

    • unmount and physically remove SD card
    • keep tablet plugged in to AC power
    • cycle on and off (OFF, not restart) several times (may require doing it from the lock screen)
    • replace SD card
    • keep plugged into AC power when firmware update begins

The first couple of times I tried the above, it didn't fix the "won't shut down" problem. I don't know what I did differently when it finally was able to update the firmware. Maybe I did or didn't physically remove the SD card after unmounting it during the on/off cycle steps? Maybe I did or didn't put the SD card back in after the on/off cycling? Maybe it was just happenstance where the firmware update happened when the tablet decided to shutdown that particular time. I believe the above steps are what I actually did when it worked, but if it doesn't work for you, try try again and maybe alter the steps a little.

All I know is now the tablet has no problem with shut down whether the SD card is in or not, whether or not the power's plugged in, and doesn't require it to be working off a lock screen (all of those factors seemed to sporadically affect the shutdown before, none consistently, but seemed to be involved from time to time somehow).

So my recommendation is to at least give this workaround a few tries and if you're lucky eventually the firmware update will work, and when it does, at least for me, it seems to have totally solved the "won't shut down" problem.
