I was able to root my 8.4 last night using TowelRoot (originally meant for the S5). Seemed really easy!

full use of the external SD card?

I am thinking of upgrading to this (or the Nvidia Shield but at times need to save my camera raw files so need full use of that external SD card.

Only qualcomm models can be rooted with towelroot, not the exynos ones
